The university is one of the largest in Britain, the Department of Architecture at Oxford Brookes enjoys an excellent reputation. It is a lively and exciting Department hosting a wide range of special events and welcomes many visitors including excellent speakers. The Department is thriving. This year we welcomed around 150 new students onto our undergraduate courses and further 120 onto our diploma and master’s programmes. We are now one of the largest departments in the University with a total of nearly 700 students and 80 staff.

Oxford has a world reputation for research in Islamic art and architecture, and the University in the last few years has created posts in Islamic archaeology and Islamic numismatics. The University also has rich collections of Islamic culture. The Ashmolean Museum exhibits only part of its superb holdings in Islamic art and archaeology, and far more is available for study in the Museum's stores. The Museum of the History of Science houses the world's most important collection of Islamic scientific and astronomical instruments. The Bodleian Library holds thousands of manuscripts from all corners of the Islamic world, and is famous for its collection of Arab and Persian illustrated manuscripts.

 

The University of Oxford has an ancient tradition of scholarship and teaching in Islamic languages (Arabic, Persian, and Turkish), Islamic history, and the intellectual culture of Islam. The University is also famous for other related disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology and archaeological science, Byzantine studies, and medieval history. These resources are brought together for the teaching of the B.A. degree in Islamic languages with Islamic art and archaeology.

The MA in Contemporary Islamic Art offers students and professionals a unique opportunity to attain and advance their expertise and knowledge in an emerging cultural phenomenon.

Students will be given specialist training in the practice and theory of classical Islamic art within the context of contemporary Western art and design practice. This course has been designed specifically in response to a rapidly changing cultural and professional environment in the fast movement of cultures and people.

The course builds upon previous models in order to introduce the fluidity of contemporary Islamic and eastern traditions in a new and modern practice. The course takes advantage of the diverse professional backgrounds and individual expertise of the staff to support students through their chosen fields of interest.
