The leading institution for Higher Education in Syria with origins dating back to the foundation of the Medical Institute in Damascus in 1901, and the Institute of Law in Beirut in 1912. In cooperation, the institutes were reestablished in Damascus in 1919 when Arabic replaced Turkish as the language of instruction. In 1923, the two institutes merged to form the Syrian University. Over the years new faculties were established and the present title of the university was adopted in 1958.
The present title 'adopted' in 1953 after founding of new faculties. Damascus University has 15 faculties, 8 teaching hospitals a nursing School and 7 language center.
