Gulf. The construction of the project, started in late 1979. The gross cost of
the project was approximately fourteen million dinars (Approximately 48 Million
US), and it was inaugurated in June 1986.
The
use of Islamic designs and writing have taken into consideration the freedom and
use of modern technology in the construction. For that reason the general
structure of the mosque, the foundation, the pillars, the ceilings, and the
minarets are all of armored concrete. The outside cladding is of natural stone
in varying shades, and the inside
cladding
is of high quality marble and natural stone.
The niches are lined with Moroccan
tiles of geometrical patterns in rich colors. The outside courts of the mosque
are covered with Khuta stone which was originally imported from India. The
mosque consists of a main prayer court, seventy-two ( 72 ) meters each side,
topped with a stately dome with a diameter of twenty-six ( 26 ) meters that
rises to a height of forty -three ( 43 ) meters, ornamented with engraved names
of Allah in Arabic calligraphy on Isfahan ceramics, and it is equipped with ( 144 ) windows which provide natural lighting.
The grand Mosque has ( 21 )
doors made of Al-Sag ( teakwood ) with verses from the Holy Quran and Islamic
geometric designs carved by Indian craftsmen. The
main prayer court can accommodate approximately ten thousand (10000) men at
prayer
time. Along with Jum'at ( Friday prayer ) and the two Eids, other
ceremonial religious functions are observed in this court.
The
Grand Mosque has an additional prayer court for women that can hold up to nine
hundred and fifty ( 950 ) worshippers with a special entrance gate at the
